This Week’s 7: Knowing the Bible

Let’s learn (or review) some basic facts about the Bible!

  1. The Bible contains 66 books: 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.
  2. The Old Testament was mainly written in Hebrew, the language spoken by the  Israelites, and the New Testament was mainly written in Greek.
  3. The books of the Bible originally had no chapters or verses.
  4. The Bible was written by about 40 men over a period of about 1600 years dating from 1500 BC to about 100 years after Christ.
  5. The 66 books of the Bible were written by about 40 men.
  6. The Old and New Testaments form two volumes of one work.  The first is incomplete without the second and the second cannot be understood without the first.
  7. The theme of the Bible is the same across both Testaments. It’s the redemption of man to God.

These aren’t random facts for you to memorize. It’s important to be familiar with the Bible, not simply as a series of facts but as an overview that leads to a deeper understanding, and consequently, a commitment to soak in and apply its life-changing content. Know the facts, and live out the Truth.
