For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:14-19)

If we are rooted and grounded in love, we are solidly building on love. The roots dig deeply into areas we likely can’t see or explain. Roots dig into good soil, cracks in rock beds, and anywhere necessary to access nourishment and provide protection for the part of the plant above ground. What is under the ground provides for what is above the ground.

God works in the unseen, but we have to be willing to stand still and let Him develop the deep root system. We have to be willing to let Him build and grow where He knows we will get the nourishment and the strength we need. He is always providing for us. And what’s in store for us when we do?

Keep in mind these verses are a prayer. Oh, if we prayed such bold prayers! Paul’s prayer is that we, as believers, might comprehend something that surpasses knowledge.

How broad is God’s love? Hoover Dam is broad. The Sahara desert is broad. But not nearly as broad as God’s love.

How long is God’s love? The Nile River is long. The Andes Mountain range is long. But not nearly as long as God’s love.

How high is God’s love? Mount Everest is high. The moon is higher. But not nearly the height of God’s love.

How deep is God’s love? The Grand Canyon is deep. The deepest part of the ocean is deeper. But not nearly the depth of God’s love.

Anything that we can imagine pales in comparison to God’s love. Yet Paul asks that we be able to comprehend the scope of God’s love. We can’t measure God’s love in the way we measure anything here on earth. Plus, earth cannot contain God’s love. And perhaps that’s the point. Perhaps we can know the incomprehensible—just not in the exact way we define “knowing.” As we know God, we glimpse the vastness of who He is. As we glimpse God—in His sovereignty, omniscience, and omnipresence—we know that He is God and we are not. We comprehend our need for Him even when we can’t explain it. We accept our submission to Him even when we can’t measure the relationship. We accept God’s love and live in the fullness of it, not because we can quantify it but because God is love. And when we trust Him, when we give everything of ourselves to live according to His will and ways, we see everything from a different perspective. An amazing, incomprehensible, immeasurable perspective.

Dear God, you are the God of my salvation. You are the God of all love. You are the one and only God. You are the beginning and the end, and You cover all things. You know all things. And you can do all things. I ask that You continue to build in me Your will and fill me with Your presence and love. I am Your vessel. I commit my life, every detail of it, to you. Thank You for loving me.
