As I looked for a parking space at the grocery store, I noticed a man in a motorized shopping cart. His cart was full, and he was trying to maneuver his vehicle’s back door. The lot was full, so by the time I found a space and walked toward the store, he was standing at the back of his vehicle, trying to move one bag at a time. I asked if he minded if I helped.

He hesitated and said he can do it himself. I try to be encouraging when I told him I was sure he could but that I could at least save him a few steps by handing him the bags. He agreed, and it didn’t take us long. I wasn’t sure why the person bagging had made some of the bags so heavy for him.

I asked him if there was anything else I could help with, and he said, “No. But I appreciate it.” Then he added, “Don’t ever get old.”

“Well, sir, I’m not sure I can control that!”

He laughed.

I was glad I could help even though I knew he’d rather do it himself. I’m glad the parking lot was full enough to delay me long enough to be able to help him. I’m glad he was willing to accept my help. I’m also glad I heard him laugh. He made me smile.

Sometimes it’s a small moment with a stranger that spurs a smile and a grateful heart.
