Happy Birthday, Dad!

Happy Birthday, Dad!

My dad turns 70 today! I’ve been blessed with a wonderful dad is one of the most giving – and goofy – people I know. He lives life to the fullest, and anyone who spends much time around him gets a healthy dose of laughter. In honor of my dad, I’m sharing the letter I gave him this Christmas (along with a small airplane ornament).

If you see Louie today, tell him Happy Birthday and to stay out of trouble! Love you, Dad!

I woke up on a Christmas morning many years ago – probably too early for the rest of the family – and pulled my new ornament off the tree before snuggling into bed between you and Mom. My new ornament that year was a small plane, probably to commemorate your plane and the rides I enjoyed.

It wasn’t so much the plane I enjoyed as it was being by your side. And it wasn’t just on your plane. It was riding in the combine, one of the favorites places of my childhood. It was in the pickup, delivering goodies Mom had made, visiting family or neighbors, or running errands in town. It was working around the farm – feeding livestock, fixing machinery, or thawing frozen water lines. I imagine your work would have been easier without an extra shadow, but – to me – those moments are some of my favorite childhood memories. It wasn’t about what we were doing. It was that we were doing it together.

Thanks. A small word, but it’s the only one that comes remotely close to telling you how grateful I am that you sacrificed your time while I challenged your patience. I appreciate your investment in me more than can be measured or expressed. I love and respect you as a man and as my dad.

You taught me to soar and told me I could do or be anything I wanted. Your belief in me has allowed me to explore the skies and savor the many blessings God gives me. Perhaps this ornament will help you remember my appreciation of the many memories we share.

Love, Susan

Christmas 2010

My favorite childhood memories are those moments I spend with my dad- training horses, hunting, walking through the woods, building, whatever the task or the hobby, it was always better when done with my dad!!
