Not I Am The Walrus, as in the Beatles song, but I am a walrus, as in “sounds like….”
It’s a game my (nearly adult) daughter and I play. Something or someone will make an odd sound, and one of us will giggle and declare “Sounds like…!”
We sat at our “internet cafe,” and my husband shifted a binder, spurring a sound that caused my daughter and I to quickly raise our heads in surprise. She declared, “Sounds like a walrus!” So, we proceeded to attempt to make walrus noises. Our sounds were definitely noisy. We sounded hideous. I coughed as the gutteral-sounding imitation tickled my throat. My daughter’s face contortions sent us both into fits of laughter.
My husband thought we’d lost our minds, especially when we challenged him to join us while he was trying to work on our family’s finances. (It’s all about the timing, isn’t it?)
I love fits of giggles. They can be spurred by the simplest of things – walrus imitations, a silly song, or a goofy dance. We giggled when the girls were young, but the giggles now are different, somehow deeper. Perhaps it’s because they interrupt the seriousness of life and release tension with a sigh of relief.
Laughter is exercise of the soul.
Of course, there are times when laughter isn’t well-intentioned. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, “Nothing shows a man’s character more than what he laughs at.”
What does the focus of your laughter say about you?
How often are you exercising your soul with fits of giggles and deep laughter?
What thrills do you find in daily life?
We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. Psalm 126:2
Of course, I don’t want to leave you out of the fun, so if you want to try to sound like a walrus, watch this video and do you best. Enjoy a friend to join you!
