Today I tried to encourage someone…and was encouraged in the process. Perhaps you’ve experienced something similar. It reminds me of when I lead a small group or speak at a conference. I often feel I learn much more than I’m able to pass along to others. God multiplies the portion I pour into others.
I stopped by the hospital to share a smile with a dear friend. My daughter and her friend joined me after a day of shopping. Courtney’s smile and hug are a joy for Richard…and the reverse is true as well. No hugging today because of possible germs, but smiles are nonverbal hugs, right? And germ-free!
I asked several questions and listened to updates and then Richard asked me a couple questions. Not the nonchalant “How are you?” but the pointed, direct-eye-contact “How do you feel about _____?”
Well…I could have answered with a glib response, but I knew the look in Richard’s eyes. He had committed to ask me a question, and the only respectable response was to be equally committed with my answer. So I shared, he listened, and through the process, I was encouraged.
Before we left, I asked if we could pray with him. He said “Of course. I’ll start and you can finish.” As I stood over his hospital bed, he prayed over me.
So encourage each other and give each other strength, just as you are doing now. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Reminders from today…
- When I encourage, I am encouraged.
- When I teach, I am taught.
- When I serve, I am served.
Many who are first now will be last in the future. And many who are last now will be first in the future. Matthew 19:30
What is God reminding you today?
