Pick up an object close to you. A cell phone, drink cup, appointment book. Hold it firmly in your hand.
Now, using the same hand, pick up another object to hold it firmly.
How firmly can you hold two things? Sure, if you’re using both hands, it’s not difficult at all. Or, if you’re holding small objects, it might not be too difficult. At some point, as your hand fills, you’ll struggle to pick up additional items. In order to have room, you must make room.
Sometimes you have to let go of something before you can fully grasp something else.
We don’t have a problem letting some things go. Good riddance! An unhealthy relationship, demanding job, obligatory tasks. It’s not much of a struggle to let go of undesirables.
But what about the things we enjoy? What do we do when it’s time to move on?
Sometimes you have to let go. Life is a journey, and God wants you to move. He has something else planned for you. Move out of obedience.
Consider the Israelites journey recorded in Numbers 9. On the day the Holy Tent, the Tent of the Agreement, was set up, a cloud covered it. From dusk until dawn the cloud above the Tent looked like fire. The cloud stayed above the Tent, and at night it looked like fire. When the cloud moved from its place over the Tent, the Israelites moved, and wherever the cloud stopped, the Israelites camped. So the Israelites moved at the Lord’s command, and they camped at his command. While the cloud stayed over the Tent, they remained camped. Sometimes the cloud stayed over the Tent for a long time, but the Israelites obeyed the Lord and did not move. Sometimes the cloud was over it only a few days. At the Lord’s command the people camped, and at his command they moved. Sometimes the cloud stayed only from dusk until dawn; when the cloud lifted the next morning, the people moved. When the cloud lifted, day or night, the people moved. The cloud might stay over the Tent for two days, a month, or a year. As long as it stayed, the people camped, but when it lifted, they moved. At the Lord’s command the people camped, and at his command they moved. They obeyed the Lord’s order that he commanded through Moses. (verses 15-23)
Camp when it’s time to camp. Move when it’s time to move. You might not have all the specifics of where you’re going and why or how long you’ll be somewhere…but you’ll be just where God wants you to be.
Great reminder, Susan! May I be sensitive to His leading in 2011…and ready to “MOVE” !
One of my friends texted me yesterday and said she was praying for my “shall be” of the new year. Love it!
