Indoor/Outdoor Color

When I planted the flowers in front of my house, I envisioned what they’d look like as they grew through the season. I began to enjoy them as I pulled into my driveway every day after work. I didn’t expect an added benefit: I could see one of the most colorful from inside my house as well.

I’ve never been much of a flower person. I think I’ll always keep my efforts to a minimum, just enough to add a splash of color through the summer. But I’ve learned I enjoy the process more than I thought, and I’m not as bad at it as I assumed.

This year, I took a different approach than the last couple years. My mom and I were supposed to take a trip with one of my sisters, but we changed our plans when we learned the weather wouldn’t exactly be conducive for our plans. Instead, we kept it simple, shortened the trip, and went to my sister’s house out of state. Among other things, we meandered through several greenhouses. I asked a lot of questions since my knowledge base is miniscule compared to my sister and mom’s.

I wouldn’t have meandered as much if I had been on my own. I wouldn’t have asked as many questions. But it was a fun time with family, and I learned a lot. I walked away with a fresh plan of what the front of my house would look like. The plant I can see from my living room would not have been on my radar. It wasn’t confident it would work, but it is thriving. The fact my sister ended up buying it for my birthday makes it an even sweeter reminder.

Sometimes what we plan and anticipate isn’t nearly as colorful and enjoyable as the reality that ensues.
