This Week’s 7 – Serve Your Children

Each Monday on the Pure Purpose blog, I feature This Week’s 7, a simple list about an everyday topic, giving you ideas and encouragement. Today’s post is the fourth in a series on service. Children have a wide variety of needs, based on age, personality, gender, and more. I trust you’ll be able to personalize these basic principles and ideas.

  1. Listen. What’s important to your child is important, even when it might seem trivial or silly to you. Be attentive and respectful.
  2. Surprise. It doesn’t have to be a big surprise. Let your child know you’re interested in what she likes by surprising her with something she’s shown interest in or casually mentions.
  3. Step aside. Give your child space to grow into the person God intends. The path won’t be smooth. We all make mistakes and have consequences.
  4. Step in. Know when to give your child the support she needs. She wants you in her corner even if she doesn’t acknowledge you’re there.
  5. Ask. It’s not just about gathering information but fostering authentic communication. Be a safe zone.
  6. Share. Invite your child to know you as a growing person with challenges, interests, and stories. You’re not “just a parent.”
  7. Trust. As difficult as it is to imagine anyone could love your child more than you, God does. Trust him to guide and provide every step of the way. You’re not perfect. Trust him to fill all the gaps.

Train children to live the right way, and when they are old, they will not stray from it. Proverbs 22:6
