A Jolt

photo-1519636162332-012d3caf9714I had about three hours or sleep and faced a busy day at work. But I did okay. I didn’t feel too sleepy. I chugged along, checking off my long to do list. I had a couple errands to run, so I took a late lunch and stopped by Starbucks on my way back to the office. I ordered my go-to chilly weather drink: peppermint hot chocolate. I placed a stopper in the lid to keep it warm until I returned to the office. I wondered if getting a warm milk drink would be a mistake on an already sleepy day.

When I removed the stopper and sipped my drink, I was surprised to taste peppermint mocha instead of peppermint hot chocolate. I am not a coffee drinker. I love the smell of it but despise the taste. Well, perhaps despise is a strong word. Because it actually didn’t taste too bad. Maybe my taste buds were tired. Or maybe God knew I needed a jolt even when it doesn’t taste the best to me.

He does that fairly often. He jolts me in some way that perks me up and prompts me to pay attention when I’d rather close my eyes.

And he’s always right. Even if I don’t want to see what’s right in front of me, clarity and attentiveness to the right things at the right time are good.
