There are some songs that stand the test of time—at least in our own worlds. A song enters our life at a specific time, making a lasting impact. Or consistency creates a pathway we find comforting anytime we hear it. When we sing the same song at different times, it can be infused with varying experiences.
For me, there are several worship songs woven into my heart. There is one that is savored based on the rhythm and truth. God often brought it to mind in the final days of my dad’s life, and it brought me comfort in the weeks and months that followed. A year later, it was comforting balm to my wrecked heart as I dealt with a deep betrayal and rejection. When I hear it today, it gives me strength. I sing it with courage and peace. Same words, same truth, same tune but different experiences.
There are songs that remind me of wonderful times, difficult times, or uplifting times. Some resonate deeply with me. I struggle to remember the context of others. I appreciate the truth of some and get distracted by the twisted reasoning of others. My experience differs across the same song but different times as much as across the same song but different people’s familiarity or experiences of them.
Sing the songs that create a soundtrack of your life, but allow them to shift within your heart and your mind,. Invite changes. Savor the seasons. You never know how something familiar can challenge and change you.
