Beauty Without Color

Beauty Without Color

There is no beauty without color.

I disagree. I saw the statement, and while I understood the context, I still disagreed. There is definitely beauty in color. There is also beauty in black and white and every gray in between. When looking at a black and white photo, we tend to see color, not physically but mentally. We color what we see. And we notice other details in the absence of visible color. We see shadows, depth, textures. We fill in what isn’t obvious.

Sometimes our lives are vibrant in color. But there are the dull and unimpressive moments. There are discouraging and depressing moments. There are situations soaked in greys. And it’s difficult to see the beauty. It feels overwhelming, hopeless, exhausting. But there is something more even when we can’t see or feel it. What we see or feel doesn’t always fully reflect the reality behind the snapshot. The settings affect what we see. The filters affect what we feel.

There is beauty in the grays, because there is purpose in the grays. Even when we cannot appreciate it, purpose is present. We might miss the color, but we’ll miss even more if we don’t focus where we are, sit and reflect. Look at the details. Notice the shades. Imagine the possibilities.

Because there is beauty without color.
